Windows to Heaven
posted on Mon 16th Feb 2009I have a confession to make (pun intended): I am fascinated by religious architecture. This is not because I'm a particularly religious person, rather because I appreciate the amount of awe that a cathedral, for example, can bestow on me when I enter. It's a combination of the grandeur, scale and detail that is apparent in some of these buildings that renders me nearly speechless. Perhaps it was the intention when these buildings were built to ensure that anyone who entered would be cast into a respectful silence. read more
Gaudy Gaudí?
posted on Wed 18th Feb 2009My recent musings on the architecture of cathedrals and the correlations between architectural detail and religion got me thinking about other architects. And so my mind turned to Gaudí. This isn't quite as abstract as it may seem. After all, Gaudí was the creator of La Sagrada Família, the rather unique Roman Catholic church in Barcelona. This 'Art Nouveau' church is renowned for its incredibly unique design, scale and also religious symbolism. read more
